چکیده

We present the results of the new optical polarimetric observations of the superluminal source GRO J1655–40, carried out in July 1997, with the multi-channel photopolarimeter of the Torino Observatory, using the 2.15-m telescope of Complejo Astronomico El Leoncito (Argentina). The observed amount of polarization shows (mainly in the V and I bands) oscillations which are consistent with the orbital period of the system. This gives information about physical and geometrical properties of the binary system and confirms that the optical continuum is intrinsically polarized. The origin of the polarized flux is likely to be related to electron scattering of photons from the accretion disk.

Echoes from an Irradiated Disc in GRO J 1655 – 40

We demonstrate correlated rapid variability between the optical/UV and X-ray emission for the first time in a soft X-ray transient, GRO J1655–40: HST light curves show similar features to those seen by RXTE, but with mean delay of 10–20 s. We interpret the correlations as due to reprocessing of X-rays into optical and UV emission, with a delay due to finite light travel time, and thus perform e...

Optical polarization properties of GRO J 1655 – 40

The superluminal sourceGROJ1655-40 (NovaScorpii) has been observed in July 1996, when in active phase at X-ray energies, with the multichannel photopolarimeter (UBVRI) of the Torino Observatory, using the 2.15-m telescope of Complejo Astronomico El Leoncito (Argentina). A significant amount of intrinsic linear polarization (> ∼ 3%) has been detected in the VRI bands, with the polarization direc...

The radio flaring behaviour of GRO J 1655 − 40 : an analogy with extragalactic radio sources ?

At radio frequencies, the current evidence for the microquasar–quasar connection is based on imaging observations showing that relativistic outflows/jets are found in both classes of objects. Some microquasars also display superluminal motion, further strengthening the view that microquasars are in fact Galactic miniatures of quasars. Here we demonstrate that this connection can be extended to ...

Do X-ray Binary Spectral State Transition Luminosities Vary?

We tabulate the luminosities of the soft-to-hard state transitions of all X-ray binaries for which there exist good X-ray flux measurements at the time of the transition, good distance estimates, and good mass estimates for the compact star. We show that the state transition luminosities are at about 1-4% of the Eddington rate, markedly smaller than those typically quoted in the literature, wit...

Optically thick super-Eddington winds in Galactic superluminal sources

A model of major ejection events in Galactic superluminal sources GRO J 1655-40 and GRS 1915-105 is proposed, in which episodes of e−e+ pair creation give rise to the formation of optically thick outflows accelerating protons to the limiting Lorentz factor of order 2-3. Probable source of e−e+ pairs is pion production in nucleon collisions. Subsequent deceleration of ejecta and formation of rad...
